A FABULOUS performance by all 17 players earned us a 31-12 win at York in the qualifying semi-final of the 2014 Kingstone Press Championship One play-off series.
Coming ten days after our 25-24 win at Hunslet in the previous round, it means we are now in the Championships Finals Day at Headingley Carnegie on Sunday, October 5 against the winners of York v Hunslet, who meet at the Huntington Stadium this coming Sunday, October 28 in the major semi-final.
Please be reminded that tickets for the big day out at Headingley, which features our game at 4.05pm, are on sale from the refreshment hut at Whitebank each night this week from 5pm to 7pm and again on Saturday morning, 10am to noon. Payment is by cash or cheque only.
You can also book coach travel from Whitebank for £10, leaving at 1.45pm and returning after our match at 6.30pm.
So good was our first-half performance at York that we led 24-0 at half-time with tries by Liam Thompson, David Cookson, Steven Nield and Danny Langtree, plus four goals by Steve Roper — one of them a penalty.
‘Langers’ had a brilliant first half in which he broke up the middle to set up Nieldy’s try and then took an interception on his own line to race the full length to score just seconds before half-time.
York reduced their deficit to 24-12 in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but a drop goal by ‘Ropes’ 13 minutes from the end gave us a crucial 13-point lead, followed shortly afterwards by a George Tyson try, goaled by ‘Ropes’ which put the issue beyond doubtt.
