Workington 20 – Oldham 24

Date published: Monday, October 10, 2011

ROUGHYEDS put up a stunning performance at Workington on September 4 to finish their regular league campaign with a memorable 24-20 win, our seventh in the last nine outings and one which will give everybody a confidence boost ahead of the play-offs.

Workington got off to a flier in last Sunday’s game with tries by Pedley and Coward in the first 14 minutes, but Roughyeds worked hard to get back into the game and were rewardedwith tries before half-time by Mark Brocklehurst and Matthew Fogaerty.

Roughyeds then got well on top in the second half to register further unanswered tries by Neil Roden (after a great break by Valu Bentley); by Jamie Dallimore (on the back of his quick thinking and lightning reactions); and by Callum Casey (on a defence-splitting pass by Neil Roden).

Dallimore converted two of them as Roughyeds went into a 24-10 lead midway through the half.

Town were not going to go down without a battle, however, and they capitalised on the receipt of several penalties to score late tries by Carter and Kaighan to finish only four points in arrears.

Nevertheless, this was another superb win for Roughyeds, who have now beaten each of the other five play-off clubs at least once this year and who can now look forward with confidence to the start of the play-off series.
