MAINTENANCE company M & Y have given Oldham Rugby League Club a helping hand in the build-up to the first game of the season at Whitebank on Sunday.
A three-man gardening team of Andy Patmore, Paul Nickson and Len Davies gave the pitch and surrounding areas a pre-season makeover ahead of the warm-up game against Championship club Swinton Lions.
“A lot of preparation work is always needed before the first match and we were delighted to get the support of M & Y,” said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton.
“To have the use of their machinery and expertise was a massive help and was another example of a company being willing to demonstrate its support for the club and for the local community.
“Our thanks go to M & Y, to the company’s gardening services contracts manager Darrel Rogers and to their landscaping team.”
Mr Rogers is well known to local rugby league fans as a former player with Oldham and Swinton.
He signed for the then Watersheddings-based club when he was 18 and on the same day as his pal Barrie McDermott, while in more recent years he was a youth team coach at Waterhead.
He said: “Our Greater Manchester depot is close to Whitebank and when the opportunity came to do our bit for Roughyeds and the local area we jumped at it.”
M & Y is part of the Regenda Group, with which Oldham RL has close community connections, and which is currently working on a ten-year, £5m project for Limehurst Village, looking at ways to improve the environment, housing, recreational and employment opportunities in the area.
