Whitebank Attack

VANDALS have again attacked the Whitebank Stadium, breaking in and setting fire to the video gantry, causing damage estimated at £1,000 and destroying the structure.

It was the third attack in as many weeks. In the first one, a portable toilet was destroyed by fire and in the second raid vandals broke into a refreshment trailer and caused damage to the interior.

Club chairman Chris Hamilton has since told the Manchester Evening News that he dreads the phone ringing at night following a total of eight breaks-ins at the ground in the last year.

He added: “I’m cheesed off. We are not a rich club, everyone knows that. We are working really hard to keep the club going in this economic climate, which is hard enough itself.

“There are other buildings on the site, including changing rooms, and you wonder what next?”

He also questioned the motives of “mindless idiots” and went on: “I’d love to come face to face with whoever is behind this to ask them what they get out of such wanton criminality.

“It’s upsetting because we are trying to build a community facility, something that we can open up for community use. The vast majority of those who live nearby support that. As always its just a few mindless idiots.

“I would ask anyone who has any information to contact the police, the club or Crimestoppers.”

Police Sgt Paul Archer was quoted thus in the newspaper: “This is the third time in less than a month that the club has suffered at the hands of mindless criminals.

“The facilities are widely used  by local residents and I want the public to help us to identify those responsible. If you have any information about the arson or about any other incident at the ground please call us.”

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
