VIKING Fitness, the new gym in Lees, have put their weight behind the Roughyeds’ plan to develop a reserve team ‘feeder’ operation involving local players.

John Hough’s Oldham-based players in his reserve team squad are doing three weights sessions a week at Viking, whose co-owner, Andrew Whittaker, is no stranger to the local rugby league scene.

Andrew (37), a former Higginshaw player, opened Viking Fitness 14 weeks ago on the St John Industrial Estate in Lees in partnership with Wayne Carter, a former UK power-lifting champion.

Saddleworth Rangers also use the Viking facilities twice a week, while regular visitors to the gym are locally-based Super League stars Kevin Sinfield, skipper of Leeds Rhinos, and Jordan Turner of Hull.

Said Andrew: “We are delighted to team up with Roughyeds, whose reserve team squad will include a significant number of players from this area. As a former Higginshaw player myself I have an affinity with the local rugby league community.

“John (Hough) is doing a great job in bringing players through and it’s good to know that Viking Fitness will be helping him to keep the conveyor belt of talent moving along.”

Hough will be heading two midweek evening sessions for his squad at Viking, plus another on Sundays throughout the pre-season programme.

“It’s a great facility,” he said, “and just what we need to get the players ready for the season ahead. Our prep work this time last year played a big part in enabling us to reach the play-offs for the first time in our third season. It also helped the players to develop to their full potential.

“The goals for 2011 will be to progress even further in the play-offs and to continue to produce more players for the first team, and the grounding we are getting at Viking Fitness will play a big part in that.”
