Under 20s at Keighley

OLDHAM RL Club’s young loose-forward Liam Thompson plays his second game after a shoulder operation in the under-20s side to take on Keighley Cougars at Cougar Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).
The 21-year-old, a former England schoolboys international who was formerly at Wigan Warriors and Widnes Vikings, made an impressive return to rugby in the Roughyeds’ second team’s 46-22 win over Rochdale Hornets at Whitebank last Friday night.
Considering it was his first game of the season, and his debut in Oldham colours, Thompson did remarkably well as he pushed to make up for lost time and to win a senior call-up as quickly as possible.
If he does as well at Keighley tonight he will be half way there.
New centre signing Niall Bradley and prop Aaron Hall, who both train with the first-team squad, are also in action tonight and hoping to push up the pecking order, Bradley after a two-try debut in the Rochdale game and Hall after an eye-catching performance in that same nine-try victory.
Back-row forward Michael Ward, who also did well in that game, is not in the 17 to go to Cougar Park —- an early indication, perhaps, that he is lined up for the first-team party which will be going to Cheltenham on Sunday for the Kingstone Press Championship One fixture against the University of Gloucestershire All Golds
Under-20s: Halsall; R Ward, Pickerstaff, Bradley, Whitfield; Flanagan, Singleton; Hall, Foreman, Morris, Hargreaves, Rasool, Thompson. Subs (from): Parsonage, Sherratt, Ball, Ashcroft, Hurley, Fitzsimmons.
Said coach Phil Costin: “This will be a big test against a Keighley side which will include four over-age players, but we will be out to maintain the form we showed last week.”
