Transport update for Cup game

RUGBY League fans driving to the Whitebank Stadium on Sunday for Oldham’s fourth-round Carnegie Challenge Cup tie against Barrow Raiders (3pm kick off) should be aware of restrictions on Hollins Road because of resurfacing work.

Temporary traffic lights will be in use and fans are being urged to give themselves plenty of time and to use alternative routes.

“We have had talks with the Highways department and the contractors and we are grateful for their assistance,” said Oldham RLFC chairman Chris Hamilton. “To help us to avoid congestion they have modified their own plans, but supporters will still be required to make slight detours.

“We are advising everyone to leave home early.”

Fans leaving the town centre via Ashton Road should turn right into Chamber oad, heading towards Werneth Cricket Club and the Hulme Grammar School, and follow Chamber Road to its junction with Heron Street, turning left there and driving along Heron Street to Hollins Road and then on to Whitebank as normal.

Fans approaching from Bardsley or Fitton Hill and using Hollins Road will be diverted off Hollins Road along Frederick Street to then pick up the Chamber Road-Heron Street route back to Hollins Road and on to Whitebank.

Anyone using Hollins Road from the opposite direction — from Hollinwood, Failsworth or off the M60 — will be unaffected.

Barrow are the best supported club in Co-operative Championship One and when they were beaten 32-26 at Whitebank in the league a fortnight ago they helped to produce an attendance of 1,114 — a league game record.

The overall Whitebank record stands at 1,275 for a play-off tie against York in September, 2010 and, given a decent day, that might be smashed on Sunday.

“Barrow expect to bring a lot more supporters than they had in the league game,” added Chris Hamilton. “They’ve filled a few buses already and one of their local amateur clubs is also turning out in force.”

The tie is NOT all-ticket, but to ease turnstile congestion both seat and ground tickets can be bought from the club office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton up to 5pm this evening and from 9am to 5pm tomorrow (Fri).
