South Wales 40 – 20 Oldham

ROUGHYEDS’ away-day blues continued in Caerphilly on Sunday (May 15) when we were beaten 40-20 by South Wales Scorpions, who picked up their third league win of the season.

It was an even-money game for the first half hour but Scorpions dealt their visitors a hammer blow in the run-up to half-time with two tries in four minutes to lead 22-10 at the interval.

They then ran Roughyeds around in the second half to establish a 40-10 lead with three minutes left before late tries by Shaun Robinson and Ben Heaton, the latter converted by Carl Forber, at least restored some pride.

Roughyeds were once again hit by injury, losing Jason Boults in the first five minutes with an ankle injury, never to return, and then, in the second half, seeing Mick Fogerty going down under a three-man tackle on his own goal line in obvious pain from what looked like a severe knee injury.

Scorpions were the better side on the day, working hard in defence, playing good, open rugby on a wide pitch and possessing the speed at half-back, from play-the-ball and on the wing to cause Roughyeds constant problems.

They scored four first-half tries, to Oldham’s two, by hooker Steve Parry, pacy substitute forward Neil Dallimore, full-back Jamie Murphy and nippy scrum-half Casey Bromilow.

Roughyeds looked slow and laboured in comparison, although the visitors came back from 6-0 down to level at 6-6 when Ben Heaton joined up with the attack to receive from Neil Roden and crash through Ashley Bateman’s tackle near the line to touch down. Forber added the goal.

Mick Fogerty got over to score a second Oldham try in the 28th minute but his first game of the season was to turn sour on him later when he was forced to quit with a nasty-looking knee injury.

Scorpions led 22-10 at half time and in a dire second half for Roughyeds they stretched that lead to 40-10 before Roughyeds hit back in the last few minutes with tries by Shaun Robinson and Heaton — a definite case of ‘too little, too late’.
