Search for a new coach

OLDHAM Rugby League Club’s search for a new head coach is gathering pace.

Applications close on Friday, after which club chairman Chris Hamilton will draw up a short list for interview.

The club is seeking a qualified coach who is “enthusiastic, hard-working and ambitious”.

“We’ve had a good response,” said the Roughyeds’ chief.

“Applications are coming in all the time, and that’s reassuring.

“We will sift through them, and take it from there.”

The new man will succeed Tony Benson, who had been in charge for four years.

Like Benson, he will start his tenure with the club in the sport’s third tier — and desperate to get out.

Writing in the club’s match-day programme, the chairman said: “This season has been a hard one for me to swallow, as it has for you, the supporters.

“I am working long and hard to improve the club’s lot, but it isn’t easy.

“However, we will, as ever, come through this stronger and better, as a club.

“On a positive note it was a big achievement for the reserves to reach their grand final.

“Our community work is also a plus, as is the junior development we are involved with. Lots of clubs are envious of that.”

Workington are still coming to terms with their shock defeat by Oldham  which is likely to cost them the £50,000 prize for finishing top.

Their chairman Dave Bawden was, nevertheless, gracious in defeat.

He described the Roughyeds’ performance as “outstanding” and said they were the only team all season to have out-enthused his side.

And in praise of the Roughyeds’ fight to maintain professional rugby league in Oldham, he said: “I’m resilient myself, but I don’t think I could have kept bouncing back if I had suffered the knocks Chris has suffered over the years.”

For one day only, club merchandise will be sold at half-price between 9am and 5pm tomorrow (wed) at the office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton.

The Junction Inn, Ripponden Road, hopes to run a supporters’ bus to Gateshead for the Roughyeds’ last game of the regular season on September 2. The cost is £10. Ring 0161 633 2759.
