Reports
Feb 9th
:- Oldham U11 16 - 12 Warrington U11
Oldham started
the game strongly, attacking the Warrington. A wide pass to the
Oldham winger, James Tetlow, saw him side stepping over the line to
open the scoring. Oldham kept up the pressure and second rower, Alex
Jobson, dived over to make the score 8-0.
Warrington hit
back and scored a converted try just before half-time after Oldham
had denied them for 15 tackles.
After the break
Oldham continued to press and an intelligent kick to the corner by
stand-off Dan Greer, resulted in centre, Daniel Farefarrel diving
onto the ball to score in the corner to make the score 12 6.
Warrington then
put Oldham under sustained pressure but good defensive work from the
whole side kept them out and after a knock on from a Warrington
player, Oldham`s second rower, Billy McDermott took the loose ball
and raced away on a 60 metre break to what should have been a match
winning try.
Warrington hit
back quickly to score a converted try to make the score 16 12 .
This now made it an exciting finish and Warrington continued to
put Oldham under pressure but the home team`s defence held out
superbly to win the game.
This was
Oldham`s first win of this year after the first 3 games have
resulted in narrow defeats.
Alex Jobson was outstanding in
attack with Dan Greer and Billy Mc Dermott tackling well but it was
hard to single out any players when the win was built on excellent
defence and it was a good all round performance from all the squad.
Feb 2nd
:- Widnes U11 22 - 14 Oldham U11
Widnes started
the game in superb fashion, racing away into a 16 nil lead in under
10 minutes.
Instead of
conceding the game, the Oldham boys rallied around and asked
questions of Widnes in both in attack and defence.
After good work
by Jack Morrison down the right wing, quick thinking by hooker Josh
Charles saw him crashing over the try line for Oldham's first try.
As Oldham
started to settle more into the game and with Luke Skilling, Dan
Greer and Billy McDermott making inroads into the strong Widnes
defence, Alex Jobson scored an excellent individual try to make the
half time score 16 to 8.
The second half
continued in a similar fashion for Oldham, as both defences
cancelled out some great attack play.
Deep into
Widnes' half, Alex Jobson took the ball wide on the right, cut
inside, jinking his way through to score by the side of the posts,
he then converted the try. It was game on at 16-14.
Oldham
carried on pressing Widnes for the remainder of the game. With 5
minutes left , Widnes scored a late controversial try which was
converted to seal the game. Final score, 22-14 to Widnes.
All credit goes
to an Oldham side who showed real character throughout
December 1st
The Oldham Town Team Under 11`s played away to Wigan.
In wet and slippery conditions Oldham played very well against a
lively Wigan team to lose by
20-10.
The game was very much in the balance to the end
with the Oldham side attacking the Wigan line in the last 5 minutes
Wigan took an 8 0 lead from 2 unconverted
tries, one a breakaway from halfway.
After this Oldham got into their stride and
played some excellent rugby to put the home side under considerable
pressure which eventually paid off with Alex Jobson crashing over
from close in.
Prop, Matthew Jackson then had a try disallowed
when over the line and Oldham finished the half attacking again.
After the break, Wigan started strongly and
scored a converted try early on.
Oldham hit back quickly with some good handling
moves and an excellent kick by stand-off Luke Skilling was only just
recovered by a Wigan defender on his own try line and then race
clear to run the full length of the pitch to score under the post.
This was a score against the run of play and Oldham were really
unlucky not to score themselves from the move.
The Oldham side did not give up and hit back to
score after Dan Greer pounced onto an excellent kick from Skilling
to score close to the corner. The try was converted by centre Adam
Wells.
Oldham then went close a number of occasions and
were continuing to press the Wigan line when the final whistle went.
There were good performances from scrum-half Billy McDermott, Jobson
, Skilling and props Jackson, Andrew Hughes and Matthew Da`Damo.
Back-row forwards Sam Akeroyd and Paul Ainsworth also ran well to
threaten the Wigan defence.
This was Oldham`s 2nd game and they
are improving with every game and are showing that they can compete
with the best
November 3rd
The Oldham
Town Team Under 11`s started their inter-town fixtures at home
against Widnes.
The Oldham
team narrowly lost 10 6 against a lively Widnes side.
Throughout
the game the defences cancelled themselves out and Widnes went into
half-time
with a
slender
4 0 lead from a try by their
stand-off who caused Oldham trouble throughout the game .
The Oldham
team competed well in the second half but the Widnes No 6 scored
another try by the post for the Widnes team to take a 10-0 lead.
The Oldham
team then showed character to come back with a well worked try from
prop Matthew Jackson , converted by Alex Jobson.
Oldham
continued to press but failed to convert the pressure.
There were
good performances from Billy McDermott who was everywhere in defence
and attack and his half-back partner Luke Skilling.
Sam Akeroyd
troubled the Widnes defence throughout the game and Dan Greer ran
strongly in attack.
October
20th :- Festival
The Under
11`s started their fixtures in a Festival against teams from
Warrington, Widnes and Wigan.
They opened
up their campaign with an excellent 12 10 defeat of Warrington.
They scored 3 tries by winger, Josh Charles, stand-off, Billy
McDermott and prop Matthew Jackson.
Charles
finished off in the corner a great passing move across the line.
McDermott side-stepped his way over the line from 20 metres and
Jackson raced 60 metres to touch down, handing off defenders in the
process.
Unfortunately
Oldham could not repeat their earlier performance against Widnes,
losing 4 tries to nil and they lost to Wigan by the same score.
The team
throughout the games showed a lot of potential.
