Rochdale 16 – 38 Oldham

Date published: Monday, August 15, 2011

ROUGHYEDS produced a great show at Rochdale to win 38-16 (August 14) and to complete a league double over the old enemy to add to our pre-season Law Cup victory at Whitebank Stadium.
In winning each of our three derby clashes this year we have amassed a total of 110 points and conceded only 50 so there is cause for much satisfaction there as we start to look ahead now to the forthcoming play-offs.
Before they start we have two more tough games with South Wales Scorpions coming to Whitebank on Sunday (3pm), followed two weeks later by our second trip of the year to Workington Town.
[singlepic id=884 w=320 h=240 float=left]It was a nip-and-tuck first half in this latest derby victory with Dale Bloomfield and Dave Newton scoring tries for Hornets, both off Paul Crooks kicks, and Ben Heaton and Neil Roden replying for Roughyeds. Carl Forber kicked both goals to Crook’s one to give us a 12-10 lead at the break.
The second half, though, belonged exclusively to Roughyeds, who rattled in five further tries to lead 38-10 before Hornets got a late consolation effort when Mark Hobson scored off a Steve McDermott break.
Our try scorers in this superbly entertaining second half were Danny Whitmore, Callum Casey, Ben Heaton (his second of the match), Shaun Robinson and Marcus St Hilaire, while Forber converted three of them to make it five conversions out of seven overall.
With Whitmore and Casey to the fore, Roughyeds took command around the rucks on the back of quick play-the-balls and thus finished very worthy and comprehensive winners of a hard-fought derby contest.
Full marks to every player from 1 to 17. Each man in an Oldham jersey gave his all and contributed much to the team effort.
