Reserves looking forward to Final

OLDHAM RL Club’s high-flying reserves, 80 minutes from lifting their first trophy, will face Widnes Vikings in a Grand Final showdown at Whitebank next Sunday, September 25 (kick-off 3pm).

Most games in the Reserves’ under-23s Championship are played on midweek evenings or on Saturdays, but the Sunday date for the under-23s showpiece is designed to avoid a clash with the bulk of weekend sport, including amateur rugby league.

It was confirmed today after talks involving all three clubs and the RFL.

Oldham finished second to Widnes Vikings, who will be in Super League next year, but smashed them 46-22 away from home in the play-offs to earn an appearance in a Grand Final at Whitebank.

Widnes, who have lost only twice all season, both to Oldham, beat third-placed Leigh 44-18 on Saturday for the right to come to Whitebank next Sunday.

“To make the most of home advantage, and to help us to get our hands on the cup, we want a lot of fans backing us vocally, and a Sunday game should help,” said coach John Hough, whose talented side has won 16 and drawn one of its 22 games this year.

Three defeats were in the first six games, the record since then reading 13 wins and a draw from 16 outings.

Normal reserve-team admission prices will be charged (£4 adults, £2 concessions) and fans will be asked to vote for both reserve team and first team player of the year. The Whitebank social club will be open before and after the game, as usual, and refreshments will be available throughout the game from inside the ground.

Fans from the Watersheddings/Waterhead side of town can get free transport to Whitebank courtesy of The Junction Inn, Ripponden Road. Ring the Junction on 633 2759 to secure a seat.

The reserves presentation night will be at Whitebank on Friday, September 30 (7.30pm). Dress code, smart casual.

Tickets at £5 (including hot roast sandwich and potato wedges) will be on sale at the Grand Final and from the club office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Tickets at £4 for next Thursday night’s fans’ forum can also be bought at the office or, alternatively, fans can speak to Janet on 0161 628 3677 to confirm their attendance and pick up tickets on the night.

The ticket price includes supper and free entry into a draw for a 2012 season ticket.
