Reserves biggest game

BIG Bruce Johnson, sidelined for nearly three months with a serious finger injury, returns to action in the Roughyeds’ Reserves top-two play-off game against Widnes Vikings at Widnes RU club (2.30pm kick off) tomorrow (Sat)

The former Widnes and Swinton prop joined Oldham at the end of May, having played little rugby for nearly a year, and starred in three reserve-team wins against Keighley, Halifax and Sheffield.

He was in line to step up to the first team for the trip to Gateshead on June 26, but his injury in the Sheffield game was one of several such setbacks suffered by the club around that time, including his fellow prop David Ellison’s severely dislocated elbow. Ellison hasn’t played since.

“Bruce is back with us now, and he is in the squad to go to Widnes,” confirmed coach John Hough, who revealed that hooker Scott Mansfield could also be in contention after being out for several weeks with a damaged chest bone.

Tomorrow’s winners go straight through to the final, which will be played at Whitebank in the event of an Oldham win and at Widnes if the Vikings win.

The losing team will get a second chance at home against the outright winners of the four teams finishing third to sixth inclusive.

“This will be our biggest game since the reserves were re-formed four seasons ago,” added Hough.
