WITH the end of the season in sight — and what a memorable campaign it has been so far for Oldham Rugby League Club — fans are invited to start thinking about which players have impressed most at both first team and reserve team levels.

Tony Benson’s first-team squad is assured of at least a second-place finish in Co-operative Championship One and with only one away game still to be played in the regular season it boasts a 100 per cent record on its travels in league competition this year with nine wins from nine outings.

John Hough’s second team currently lies fifth in the 2010 Reserves Championship — the highest placing of the three Championship One clubs in a division dominated by Championship sides. The only teams above Roughyeds are all Championship sides, Whitehaven, Featherstone, Leigh and Widnes, while Oldham’s ten wins include victories against Championship sides Dewsbury, Leigh, Sheffield (twice) and Keighley.

Benson’s battlers and Hough’s heroes can both look forward to exciting play-off tussles in the near future, but both will be in league-match action at Whitebank this weekend, the reserves against Leigh Centurions on Saturday (2.00pm kick off) and the first team against derby rivals Hornets RL on Sunday (3.00pm kick off).

Whatever happens over the course of the next few weeks, both squads have left a pleasant and an indelible impression on the fans this year and now its payback time for supporters who are asked to make use of their votes in the annual quest to elect players of the year for both first and reserve team.

For the first time this year there will be two separate presentation evenings at Whitebank —- the first for the reserves on the evening of Saturday, August 21, followed by the senior squad’s presentations on the evening of Saturday, September 4, both timed to start at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the August 21 event, and voting papers for reserve team player of the year, are available now. Tickets are priced at £7.50, including two-course buffet meal, and they will be available before and after Saturday’s game as well as from the club’s offices in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton (tel: 0161 628 3677) during normal office hours.

“We are aiming to make the reserve-team presentation night a stand-alone event annually,” said club chairman Chris Hamilton. “The reserves have produced some superbly-entertaining rugby this year and we trust the fans will support them in numbers on the 21st.”

Voting papers will be in the social club on Saturday and also on the turnstiles and anyone not going to the game can collect them at Lansdowne Road. They can be completed and left in ballot boxes at the club on Saturday or Sunday but they must be returned before the deadline of 5pm Tuesday.

The club will also be taking votes by email. If you could email your votes to

Details of the first team’s presentation night will be announced later, but voting papers for player of the year and junior supporters’ (under-16s) player of the year are now available from the office and they will also be on the turnstiles on Sunday, with ballot boxes in the club for the posting of completed forms. Deadline for first-team votes is 5pm on Friday, August 27.

Fans are also reminded that a wide range of club memorabilia and souvenirs will be on sale inside the ground on both Saturday and Sunday, from close to the covered area for the disabled on Saturday and from near to the first-aid room on Sunday.

The club has issued another apology to fans for the lack of replica shirts this season but points out that it is due to circumstances beyond the club’s control.
