ORSA Squad Strengthener

Date published: Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Oldham Rugby League Supporters Association (ORSA) agreed, at the start of 2012, to run THE SQUAD STRENGTHENER for a trial period of twelve months.  It was to be used solely to fund the wages of new players through the 2012 season.

It helped, in its very early stages, to help fund the acquisition of Miles Greenwood, and then helped to pay the wages of Rob Foxen during his loan period with us from Swinton.  Finally the money we still had in the fund was used to help secure the contract of Jamie Dallimore for the 2013 season.  Altogether we will have raised £2300 during the 2012 season.

It is our intention to set up a new 2013 SQUAD STRENGTHENER and we have ideas to make it even more successful this year.  It is independent of the club and monies raised will be used solely to help bring in new players and secure the contracts of players when the club feels this is necessary

Already the club has, despite its limited resources, brought in a new Head and Assistant Coach, who have assembled an excellent squad of players, combining up and coming young talent with some old heads to give the squad experience.  But we have no doubt, that if more funds were available, the squad could be strengthened further for the start of the season and for mid season signings necessitated through injuries etc.

The club has not only to fund its first team squad but also the development of Whitebank and the Under 20 squad.  With the limited number of home games this season this is going to be a very difficult task.

We are changing the format this season and offering incentives for fans to partake in the SQUAD STRENGTHENER. £5 player shares will be available to be bought and these will be entered into a draw before the start of the season.

These shares can be bought in a number of ways:  a £5 a month donation by direct debit for 12 months would earn you 12 shares and 12 entries into the prize draw; a £50 one off donation would earn you 10 shares and 10 entries into the prize draw; a direct debit for 12 months of £10 a month would earn you 24 shares and 24 entries into the prize draw etc.

The minimum donation would be to buy 1 £5 share which would give you 1 entry (there is no maximum!!!!!!!).

People can choose whether to donate a lump sum in multiples of £5 or to set up a standing order for at least 12 months.

Although we are independent of the club they have offered to provide the prizes (Some of them PRIZES THAT MONEY CAN’T BUY) of which there will be at least three but this could be increased if the response is as big as we hope it will be.

1st prize:        A season ticket (Money refunded if you’ve already bought one) and a framed, signed shirt of the player of your choice.

2nd prize:        £75 voucher to spend on club merchandise or 2 tickets for end of season Players Presentation and present the Supporters Player of the Year trophy to the chosen player.

3rd prize:         £50 voucher to spend on club merchandise.

All 3 prize winners will be invited to a home match as Man of the Match sponsors with a place in the Board room and corporate hospitality.

Enclosed is a membership form to enable shares to be purchased, either by cheque or standing order. The form should be completed, signed and sent to Sheila Somerville, 48 Great Meadow, Shaw, OLDHAM, OL2 7PX.

Cheques should be made out to ORSA Squad Strengthener.

We will be holding a Meet the Coaches and Players Event at the Club on February 23rd (more details to follow) where shares will also be on sale.

Later in the year we hope to further swell funds when John Davies, a keen fan and ORSA member, intends to partake in the following events supporting the club and hoping for your sponsorship:

1) The Welsh mountain 47 miles cycle race

2) The Manchester 10k

3) Cycling to the North Wales Game in the 2013 season.

More prizes will be available for your support of these events.

Remember the more members we have the bigger contribution we can make to the success of the team.  This is your opportunity to make a real difference.  I know times are difficult but we have tried hard to make it an attractive proposition and hope you will find it possible to help make the 2013 ROUGHYED SQUAD STRENGTHENER a real success story.

Yours in sport,

Nigel Marland

(Chairman ORSA)
