ORSA celebrates 1st birthday

Date published: Wednesday, July 20, 2011

THE Oldham Roughyeds Supporters’ Association (ORSA) celebrates its first birthday this Thursday night with an Anniversary Quiz Night in the club. Yes, its over a year now since Paul Whalley set out his plans to launch a supporters’ organisation and while it is probably fair to say that progress has not exactly been meteoric, it has certainly been steady and consistent and sufficiently progressive to convince Paul that it will go from strength to strength.

There is certainly no more dedicated or enthusiastic fan than Paul and if anyone deserves to be backed and supported through an organisation of this kind it is he, so here is an appeal on his behalf for as many fans as possible to consider joining ORSA or, at the very least, to make contact with Paul to find out the nitty gritty or how YOU can help. You can ring him on 07796631192 or email him to: PW4856@aol.com

It should be a good night on Thursday (8pm). Cost per person is £1, maximum of six in a team, and there will be refreshments and prizes so please make an effort to get along and support ORSA.

Alternatively, you will no doubt have the opportunity to speak to Paul either before or after Sunday’s home game against Keighley because, true to form and always keen to be proactive, ORSA is to hold a Giant Tombola in the club with the object of raising funds which will, in turn and subject to what the members decide, go towards supporting the parent club — the association’s main objective.

Another major fund-raiser coming up soon will be the Sponsored Walk from Whitebank to Spotland ahead of the derby clash at Rochdale on Sunday, August 14. It starts at 10am from Whitebank with the objective of raising funds for both ORSA and Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

Application forms and sponsorship forms are now available so if you would like to take part, either as a walker or a volunteer support worker on the day, please contact Paul by either of the methods given above.

You might also be aware that ORSA is forging links with other organisations such as Higginshaw Community Club, Oldham Community Radio and, more recently, the Junction Inn at the bottom of Ripponden Road. Mark Corbett and Mike Nuttall at the Junction have joined ORSA and as many of you will already know they are keen to support Roughyeds in any way they can. They have started to lay on free transport to Whitebank from that side of town on match days (first team, reserves and scholarship) and in conjunction with ORSA they also plan to provide transport to away games, this at a competitive price. To find out more you can contact the Junction on 0161 633 2759, on 07814617541 or by email to: junctioninn@hotmail.co.uk

At a recent members’ meeting ORSA agreed to support the following events: (1) a table top sale before a reserve game; (2) regular quiz nights; (3) today’s Giant Tombola. It was also agreed to back the following through sponsorship: (1) First team supporters’ player of the year; (2) Scholarship player of the year; (3) to purchase two Club Cash lottery memberships.

Members have agreed to switch the night for regular monthly meetings from Friday to Thursday so dates for the rest of the year (all meetings on Thursday nights at Whitebank starting at 8pm) are August 4, September 1, October 6, November 3, December 1.
