ORSA — A Little gem

As the season comes to a close a very small band of Roughyeds supporters feel very proud of the part they have played in a season that has been a great success.

Oldham Roughyeds Supporters Association (ORSA) has only a small number of paid members, while active members can be counted on the fingers of both hands.  Despite this they have, from November of last year to the present, managed to help the club to the tune of just short of £5,000.

This has been achieved through the Squad Strengthener Appeal (£1,750 to date), which has helped the club with loan signings during the season; player sponsorship, shirt sponsorship and sponsorship of The Players 2013 Awards Night (£2,750); and a donation of £320 which has supplied the players, coaching and conditioning staff with nutrition and ice baths.

ORSA Chairman, Nigel Marland said: “By the end of November we hope the figure we have raised over the year will top the £6,000 mark.  I cannot thank enough our handful of active members who sweat blood for their club, organising events, donating prizes, selling raffle tickets and name cards. At the time the reward looks small but when you add it all up at the end of the year it’s something they should all be very proud of.  I must also thank our fans and indeed the fans of visiting clubs who have generously supported our fund-raising activities “

ORLFC Chairman and Chief Executive, Chris Hamilton added, “I thank the match day volunteers for the invaluable help they give the club, without which we could not continue.  Many of these volunteers are also ORSA members who manage to fit in money raising events on match days as well as fulfilling their match day duties.  These are real fans and it often means they miss watching part of the game which for them is an extreme sacrifice.  I cannot thank them enough for the support, both financial and physical, they give to the club.”

Assistant Coach, Lee Spencer (Spanner) said, “ORSA have backed the lads all season and whatever we have asked for they’ve provided, and for that we are eternally grateful.”

Nigel added, “The job isn’t over yet.  We are having a Whisky Tasting on Friday, October 4, a Quiz Night at The Lyceum Theatre, Union St on Thursday, November 7 and a Race Night, organised jointly with Higginshaw ARLFC at their Sport and Social Club on Friday, November 15.  It is also planned to run a Cheese and Wine Evening early in the New Year.

Any support for any of these ventures will be greatly appreciated.  You don’t need to join ORSA, just support our events and who knows what we will achieve next year?”
