The RFL are pleased to announce that 2012 Team GB Judo contestant and 2013 British Judo Champion Sophie Cox will be guest of honour at the 2013 Women’s Rugby League World Cup final at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, Leeds, on Sunday July 14.

A seven-time British champion, four-time European Championships medallist, European Cup champion 2012 and ambassador for ‘Us Girls’, Cox will be on hand to present the trophy to the winning captain when the competition comes to a climax during the Festival of World Cups Finals Day.

Rochdale-based Cox is a long-time fan of Rugby League, even making it into the Guinness Book of World Records after becoming the first ever female Rugby League player at Wembley Stadium when  she played in the traditional ‘schoolboy’ curtain-raiser before the 1993 Challenge Cup final and she is looking forward to attending the Women’s final.

“It’s an honour to be asked to attend the Women’s World Cup final and present the trophy,” said Cox.

“My father is a massive Rugby League fan and I grew up with the sport through him so it will be a great day for both of us. Rugby League is a very tough and competitive sport and I have a lot of admiration for the players for what they go through and the demands they put on themselves.

“It will be great experience and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Festival of World Cups Director Julia Lee said; “We’re delighted to have Sophie attending the Festival of World Cups Finals Day to present the Women’s World Cup trophy.

“Sophie has a track record of success in a very physical and competitive sporting environment and has excelled at the highest level and is an influential figure in her sport nationally and her attendance no doubt adds further significance to the Finals Day.”
