Oldham RLFC 40 – 14 Gateshead

TONY B and the boys went top of Championship One — admittedly after only two games — thanks to our 40-14 win against Gateshead Thunder at Whitebank.

Only two games into the league season and only ourselves and Barrow can boast two wins out of two — a clear indication of how competititve this division is and how it is likely to remain so over the course of the summer.

Barrow are the next visitors to Whitebank on Sunday, April 1 (3pm kick off) so that should be a 1 v 2 contest that will hopefully produce one of our best league crowds of the season.

paul-nooneWe scored seven tries against Thunder, these coming from Paul Smith, Paul Ballard (2), Neil Roden, Miles Greenwood (2) and Paul Noone, while Jamie Dallimore landed six conversions from seven shots to take his record over the two league games to 10 out of 11.

Thunder provided tough opposition in the opening spell after we had won the toss and elected to play up the slope.

There was no score until midway through the half but once we had established some sort of control forward we scored four tries without reply to hold a commanding 22-0 lead at the interval.

That lead was extended to 28-0 with the first of Greenwood’s brace only two minutes into the new half, but then came a period of Thunder pressure, perhaps caused in the main by our tendency once again to fall into our old habit of conceding penalties.

Four in a row went to the visitors and it was on the back of those Roughyeds offences that Thunder were able to score three tries in 13 minutes to take a little bit of the gloss off an otherwise highly professional performance by Tony’s men.

Nevertheless, we can boast the best defensive record in the division after two games and only one team has scored more points than us and that was due only to the way in which London Skolars put 66 points past North Wales Crusaders.
