Oldham RLFC 30 – 35 South Wales Scorpions

Date published: Monday, May 28, 2012

INDIVIDUAL errors proved costly in this defeat by South Wales Scorpions at Whitebank, although coach Tony Benson had reason to be positive about other aspects of the performance by what is still an injury-depleted squad.

Apart from anything else we salvaged a bonus point and the four we have now amassed from our five defeats means that we are still hot on the heels of the top four, only three points behind fourth-placed Whitehaven.

We are now at the half-way stage of the Championship One campaign and we have each of the other nine clubs to play once again — four at home and five away from Whitebank on our travels.

“Promotion is still very much within our grasp. Several of the injured will be back by the time we play North Wales Crusaders in a couple of weeks and we intend to start the second half of the campaign as we started the first.”

It was 18-18 at half time against the Scorpions with first-half tries for Roughyeds having been scored by on-loan signing Lewis Reed, hooker John Clough and second-row man Michael Ward, who was later to receive the club’s official man-of-the-match award for his non-stop work in the forwards on a scorching hot day.

Graham Holroyd, doing the goalkicking in the absence of the injured Jamie Dallimore, kicked beautifully to land all three and, in fact, finished with five out of five as well as providing the key passes for tries by Ward and by Miles Greenwood.

Scorpions went in front four times, but on each occasion we levelled. It was 24-24 until midway through the second half when Scorpions scored 11 unanswered points to go 35-24 in front before David Tootill got our fifth try, again goaled by Holroyd, two minutes from the end.

Danny Whitmore did well as Dally’s half-back replacement and there was a debut on the right flank for Chris Holroyde, who has joined us on loan from Halifax.

John Gillam was back on the left wing after 11 weeks out with a broken toe and Paul Noone was back in the second row after five weeks out with a troublesome ankle.
