Oldham RLFC 16 – 26 Whitehaven

Date published: Monday, May 21, 2012

DAVID Cookson scored two tries and Mark Brocklehurst added another, but they were not enough to end our poor spell of results against a very strong and experienced Whitehaven side at Whitebank.

The Cumbrians had first use of the slope and turned round with an 18-4 lead thanks to tries by Gee, Wiper and Calvert and three excellent conversions by Rudd.

Roughyeds’ only score of the first half was the first of Cookson’s brace when he managed to squeeze in from dummy half after a strong break by Alex Thompson finished just short of the line.

[singlepic id=1306 w=320 h=240 float=left]The visitors extended their lead to 20-4 with a penalty early in the second half, but we had the better of the game’s final quarter in which we scored a try apiece by Cookson and Brocklehurst to the away team’s one touchdown by prop Houghton.

Graham Holroyd kicked the Cumbrians to death in the second half, each of his side’s two second-half tries coming directly from Haven’s inability to defuse his massive left-foot bombs.

Our star performer, without any doubt, was full-back Miles Greenwood, who was our most dangerous attacker and also saved two certain tries with great tackles on first Craig Calvert, one of the fastest wingers in our division, and then on Lee Doran.

A try by Doran would have denied us a bonus point, but we at least came out of this game with the bonus thanks to Greenwood’s brilliant piece of defensive work right on the Oldham try line.

Loan signings David Tootill and Lewis Reed played their fitrst games for the club and both did as well as could be expected, considering it was their first run-out with new colleaguews and they had trained with the squad only twice.
