CENTRE Richard Ward, a first-year scholar with Oldham Rugby League Club, won top prize at the under-18s end-of-season presentations when he was named coach Phil Costin’s player of the year.

A 17-year-old from Denton, Richard was previously with Salford City Reds before he joined the Roughyeds’ Extended Scholarship scheme to become a leading member of the side in his first season.

In presenting the award, sponsored by OHM Electrical Services, Costin said: “Richard quickly settled into new surroundings and into the Roughyeds’ way of doing things. He conducted himself excellently on and off the field — in training and on match days — and we are looking forward to having him back with us next year.”

Other awards were won as follows:

Most improved player (sponsored by software company 7L7L): second-year back-row forward Josh Hulme, formerly with Fitton Hill and Hathershaw Bulldogs.

Supporters’ player of the year (backed by ORSA): second-year hooker Andrew Ball, from Leigh.

Players’ player of the year (Doughty’s Gym, Shaw): second-year prop Jordan Morris, the team captain, from Warrington.

Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre are sponsoring each of the club’s three presentation evenings (this one and two next month for the reserves and the first team) and in addition have backed a new ‘Unsung Hero’ award, open to anyone connected with either of the three teams.

The first winner, presented by club chairman Chris Hamilton, went to under-18s coach Costin for his tireless work in heading the backroom team that organises and runs the Extended Scholarship Scheme.

Roughyeds, the only Championship One club to run a reserve side and a scholarship squad, plan to do the same again in the 2013 season.
