OLDHAM Rugby League Club are further extending their community work by providing facilities and coaches for the preparation of Service Area town teams in the under-15 and under-16 age groups.
Top players in the town at that age will meet at Whitebank for weekly training sessions during August, at which they will be coached by three members of the Roughyeds staff —- Paul Ashton, Phil Costin and Mark Brocklehurst.
Ashton coaches Roughyeds’ reserves; Costin looks after the club’s Extended Scholarship under-18s; and Brocklehurst, a senior player with teaching experience at Hathershaw College, assists Ashton with the second team.
Chris Chamberlain, rugby league development manager for Oldham and Tameside, has told selected players by letter: “You will receive high-quality coaching and possibly the opportunity to represent Oldham and Tameside Service Area at local festivals.
“The programme is backed by Oldham RLFC, who will provide the use of Whitebank and the use of their coaches to support the players’ development.”
Coaching sessions will be at Whitebank from 10.30am to noon on the next three Saturdays, August 4, 11 and 18 and possibly on August 25 although that has to be confirmed because it is the day of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
Roughyeds were happy to accept the invitation to lend a hand.
Said chairman Chris Hamilton: “The Rugby Football League is encouraging professional clubs to get involved with their local Service Areas at this age group.
“At Oldham, we believe passionately in furthering the development of rugby league — that’s why we run three teams — and we will always try to help other parties if requested to do so, as we did when we were asked by other agencies to oversee the formation of a new junior club in the Limehurst Village area near our ground.
“We are keen to support the Service Area in any way we can.”
Roughyeds’ under-18s, who play Halifax at Whitebank tomorrow (wed), 7.45pm kick off, will pick from the following:
Fitzsimmons, Kenwright, Woods, Ashworth, Ward, Mallinson, Flanagan, Lawton, J Morris, A Morris, Broadman, Hulme, White, Ashcroft, Sherratt, Ball, Hughes, Eastup.
