Oldham RL Break-In

Date published: Wednesday, July 13, 2011

RAIDERS broke into Oldham Rugby League Club’s Whitebank Stadium late on Monday night — for the fifth time in three months — and ransacked a storage hut that was formerly used for the sale of refreshments.

Crowbars were used to remove metal grills on windows, which were then smashed and forced before the intruders caused damage to the inside of the hut and then turned their attention to a nearby catering trailer.

“They tried to get into the trailer by forcing the door,” said livid club chairman Chris Hamilton. “They damaged the door, but fortunately they couldn’t get in.

“This is the fifth time something like this has happened since the Spring. A lot of people are working hard to get the club on a good footing, but we continue to be the victim of attacks like this.

“Words that can’t be printed don’t come near to what I would like to say.”

Police were quickly at the scene, he added, and they were backed-up by a firearms unit that happened to be in the area.

The club is appealing to anyone with information to ring the police, the club or Crimestoppers.
