Oldham reserves v Whitehaven reserves

Date published: Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Roughyeds’ reserves four-match winning run ended in a 36-12 defeat at Whitehaven on Saturday when forward Carl Fields, from the Higginshaw club, gave an eye-catching performance on debut.

Prop Michael Cadd and winger Danny Chetwynd scored tries for the visitors, both improved by Mick Diveney.

Roughyeds trailed 12-6 at half-time but pulled level at 12-12 before the Cumbrians got well on top in the last 20 minutes.

Michael Ward was sin-binned for dissent late in the first half, and Roughyeds suffered further setbacks when they picked up a series of injuries.

Second-row man Johnny Walker departed with a head injury in the seventh minute, never to return, and winger Sean Hamilton dislocated a shoulder midway through the first half.

Prop Ben Mellor sustained a suspected broken nose and Dean Hatton had to quit with a knee injury quarter of an hour from the end.

An 8-3 penalty count in Whitehaven’s favour, plus disruptions caused by so many injuries, were key factors in the result.

Team: Brocklehurst; Hamilton, J Knight, Williams, Chetwynd; Diveney, Connick; Cadd, Barrowclough, Mellor, Ward, Walker, Smith. Subs: Hatton, D Knight, Fields, Joy.
