Oldham 64 London Skolars 8

WE flew into the Championship One play-off final with an outstanding performance against London Skolars, which earned us an eye-opening 64-8 win at Whitebank.

The players were determined to respond positively to the previous week’s disappointing 23-22 defeat by Rochdale and they sure did it in style, scoring 11 tries in total, ten of them converted by man-of-the-match Lewis Palfrey.

Our top try scorer Jon Ford again led the way with a hat-trick to take his tally for the season in league and play-off games to 19 and to become the top try scorer in the whole of the division.

Dale Bloomfield and Adam Files weighed in with a brace apiece and other tries came from Josh Crowley, Richard Lepori, David Cookson and Danny Langtree.

Kicking immaculately, Palfrey landed conversions from all distances and angles to hit the bull’s eye ten times on the trot before failing with his last kick of the game from the left-hand touchline after the final hooter had already sounded.

Every player contributed significantly in an impressive display of teamwork which will stand the squad in good stead for Sunday’s final which is a re-match with Rochdale at Leigh Sports Village, kicking off at 2pm.

We scored four tries in the opening 14 minutes against London; led 36-8 at half-time; and then finished the job going up the slope in the second half when we scored five tries to the six we recorded in the opening half.
