Oldham 46 Coventry 6

WE booked our place in the fourth-round draw for the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with another resounding win against Coventry, this time scoring nine tries in a 46-6 triumph.

Both teams made changes from the previous week’s encounter in the iPro Sport League One Cup, which we won 42-6, but in many respects the two ties followed similar patterns.
Lewis Palfrey, who kicked a magnificent seven goals from seven attempts in the first game, wasn’t able to emulate his 100 per cent success rate this time, converting five of the nine tries, scored by Sammy Gee, Jarrod Ward, George Tyson, Liam Thompson, Michael Ward, Adam Clay (2), Jack Holmes and on-loan prop Micky Learmonth.
After going in at half-time with a 26-0 lead, we conceded Coventry’s only try early in the second half, scored by Matt Cooper and improved by Stephen Coleman.
Despite conceding 88 points in the two cup ties, and scoring only 12, the new boys from the Midlands worked hard on each occasion, never once let their heads drop and made sure we had to work for our tries. Nothing was offered on a plate.
Nevertheless, we have made a solid and encouraging start to the new season with success in the early rounds of these two cup competitions and we now look forward to the draw for the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 6.45pm, followed by our second-round trip to Barrow next Sunday (2pm) in the iPro Sport-backed competition.
The team in the second of the two games against Coventry was: Nield; C lay, Gee, Holmes, J Ward; Palfrey, Roper; Neal, Owen, P Joy, Crowley, Tyson, Thompson. Subs: Files, Hughes, Learmonth, M Ward.
