Oldham 26 – 14 Barrow

ROUGHYEDS produced another terrific performance to beat Barrow Raiders 26-14 in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

Barrow had first use of the Whitebank slope and went 14-0 up inside half an hour with tries by Nixon and Harrison and three goals by player-coach Darren Holt, who was one of seven new faces in the Raiders line up compared to the side which we beat 32-26 in the league a fortnight ago.

[singlepic id=1201 w=320 h=240 float=left]We had to play mainly a containing game in the first half, but we cut the Raiders lead to eight points with a try by Alex Thompson on the stroke of half time, manufactured by Jamie Dallimore close to the line.

In the second half we had the slope, and we put it to good use to score three more unanswered tries by Paul Noone, Matthew Fogarty and Miles Greenwood.

In total we scored 26 unanswered points to turn the game on its head and to become the only Championship One side in the draw for the last 16.

The club’s official man-of-the-match award went to Danny Whitmore, who brilliantly fashioned the decisive try for Greenwood that gave us a 22-14 lead with 12 minutes still to play.

Noone won the champagne-moment award for his try just after half time, and there was also special recognition for Lucas Onyango, who made his 100th appearance for the club at Rochdale on Good Friday.

A delighted Tony Benson said: “Even though we trailed by eight points at half-time we felt confident the job was half done.

“Our attack had not been quite as well organised as it might have been, but we knew what we had to do in order to get it right.

“We hadn’t done much wrong defensively and we were confident we could pin them in their half of the pitch in the second half, keep the ball away from them and dominate possession and territory.

“Defensively, we were superb and they couldn’t break out of their own half.”
