Oldham 16 Oxford 18

IN the end Scott Naylor’s Oldham and Tony Benson’s Oxford were separated by one conversion, both sides having scored three tries.

Lewis Palfrey was unlucky to hit a post off the left-hand touchline when attempting to add the extras to another Adam Files try, his fifth of the season. The young hooker has now scored one try in each of our last four games.
Our other two tries were both scored in the second half by Danny Langtree, whose total for the season now stands at six, which gives him the lead.
Oxford led 12-4 at half time, each side scoring one try down the slope and two up it.
The first Langtree try followed a Files grubber kick into the in-goal, while two of the Oxford tries were the direct result of similar tactical kicking by Brett Robinson.
An ever increasing number of tries across the whole of the division are now related to accurate kicks behind the defensive line which are difficult to defend, particularly so if they are accurate and well weighted.
Robinson’s kicking for the visitors was more effective than the kicking of Palfrey and Neil Roden and that provided Oxford with a distinct advantage.
Neverthess, it was anyone’s game when Langtree (try) and Palfrey (goal) made it 16-18 with ten minutes still to go, followed immediately by Jonny Leather’s restart kick which went out on the full to give Oldham a penalty and a wonderful chance of setting up position for the winning try.
Oxford held on, however, against a Roughyeds attack that often flattered to deceive and didn’t have the accuracy or variety of kick to put the visitors under real and sustained pressure.
