Oasis Academy Oldham is looking to drive student fitness and sporting standards after landing a partnership with Oldham Rugby League Club.

The deal will see coaches and players from the Kingstone Press Championship One side rolling out special training and mentoring sessions with students.  Plans are also in place to involve club physiotherapists and nutrition experts in lessons.

The Whitebank Stadium side trains at the Academy’s top-class sports facilities during the week in the hope of becoming one of the two clubs who will win promotion this summer.

Oasis Academy PE Head Joe Varey said staff and students are enormously excited by the partnership.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to work with some of the leading sports stars in our area,” he said. “Oldham Rugby League Club initially registered an interest in the Academy to use our excellent facilities. The team now regularly train here using the 3G pitches, athletics track and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). Our relationship is developing extremely positively. We now plan to roll out a number of joint initiatives. We are keen to use the club’s knowledge and expertise in areas like fitness and nutrition by involving them in suitable BTEC lessons. We also plan to provide leadership, responsibility and team working sessions with players providing mentoring advice.”

The rugby league side has already started running after-school coaching sessions for Year 7, 8 and 9 students.  The partnership could also see Academy students providing half time entertainment on match days and helping with ball boy duties.

Oasis Academy Oldham Principal David Hayes said: “We are delighted to be working alongside this well-respected local rugby league club. This development is a sign of our desire to create meaningful and lasting partnerships with nearby clubs, businesses and organisations. We want our facilities to form a hub for the community to raise the ambitions, aspirations and learning experience for our students.”

Chairman of Oldham Rugby League Club Christopher Hamilton said: “We are hugely impressed with the facilities at Oasis Academy Oldham. They are very close to our club in the heart of the community and are simply the best sporting amenities we have ever used. We hope this will be a long standing relationship helping to promote rugby league at grass roots level. Physical fitness is so important to young people and there are many valuable skills to learn from sport including discipline, commitment, respect and team work. This partnership also crucially gives us the ability to drive up standards within our own club. In addition we are genuinely excited at the opportunities this partnership provides and we are looking forward to developing it further.”

Head Coach Scott Naylor said: “The facilities at Oasis Academy Oldham have already proved to be of great benefit with an almost uninterrupted pre season training schedule despite the weather. There is no doubt that the facilities are of the highest standards and this has not only given everybody at the club a huge boost but has enabled us to carry out high level, high intensity training at every session. The assistance the staff have provided has also been excellent and we are very grateful.”
