Northern rail 9’s draw

ROUGHYEDS have been given a tough challenge in the Northern Rail 9s at the Memorial Ground, Blackpool on Saturday, July 17.

They have been drawn in pool 2 with three Co-operative Championship sides, Featherstone Rovers, Barrow Raiders and Sheffield Eagles.

This is the most demanding pool of the five and the only one to include three teams from the higher of the two Championship divisions.

Pool 1: Dewsbury Rams, Hornets RL, Swinton Lions, Gateshead Thunder.

Pool 2: Featherstone Rovers, Barrow Raiders, OLDHAM, Sheffield Eagles.

Pool 3: Keighley Cougars, Workington Town, York City Knights, Whitehaven.

Pool 4: Doncaster, Blackpool Panthers, London Skolars.

Pool 5: Halifax, Hunslet Hawks, Leigh Centurions.

All clubs in the Championship and Championship 1 are involved in the 9s apart from Toulouse, South Wales Scorpions and the two Championship clubs which will compete the following day in the Northern Rail Cup final at nearby Bloomfield Road, Batley Bulldogs and Widnes Vikings.

“We couldn’t have faced a tougher draw than this one,” said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton, “but it’s certainly one to challenge us and, hopefully, to bring out the best in us.

“Featherstone and Barrow are two of the strongest sides in the Championship and Sheffield got to the final of the 9s last year, so we’ve got our work cut out.

“But Tony and the boys will be giving it their best shot in this tough pool in which they will be flying the flag for Championship 1”.

Tickets for the 9s purchased on the day will cost £10 adults and £6 concessions. Normal prices for tickets bought in advance are £9 and £5, but tickets pre-purchased from the Roughyeds office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton (tel: 0161 628 3677) are available at £6 and £3.

These tickets, available now, also carry a £5 discount on adult tickets for the next day’s Northern Rail Cup final.

Added Chris: “The weekend of July 17 and 18 will be a big one for rugby league in Blackpool, with the 9s on the Saturday and the Northern Rail Cup final on the Sunday.

“We hope to have a good following of Roughyeds supporters at the 9s and anyone intending to back Tony and the boys can make considerable savings if they get their tickets, available now, from the Roughyeds office.”

The office in Lansdowne Road, Chadderton is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
