Nield to take his chance

Steven Nield is raring to go and ready to do his hometown club proud at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Sunday when Oldham look to overcome Hunslet Hawk in the Kingstone Press Championship One Grand Final (4.05pm).

Neild is Oldham born and bred and grew up playing for local community club Saddleworth Rangers. He is now in his second year playing in the senior squad and was unlucky to miss out on last year’s final against Rochdale Hornets.

“It was hard news to take but I just missed out on making the final 17 last year,” said the 23-year-old. “This is my first final for the senior squad and I’m ready to take my chance.

“It’s great to play for your hometown team, you always give that little bit extra because of that. There will be a few of us in the squad who have come through the ranks and are from the area which is good to see.

“Scott Naylor has been fantastic since he came here as coach. He sets up his game plans and gets us all working hard to follow those plans. It must be working, we’re in the final!”

This will be the fourth time Oldham and Hunslet have met this season and Neild says Naylor is playing down the Grand Final hype surrounding Sunday’s game.

“All the lads are really looking forward to having a run out at Headingley on Sunday,” said the full-back. “Scott is playing it down though and doesn’t want us to get too ahead of ourselves.

“He has played for the top clubs and been involved in some of the biggest games so the advice he passes on to us is priceless.

“We’re expecting a big, physical game from Hunslet. We had the weekend off and training will be as normal this week to keep us focussed on the job ahead.”
