New winger Rob Foxen joins Roughyeds on loan

BIG Rob Foxen, the Swinton Lions winger, has joined Oldham on a month’s loan.

The 24-year-old former Folly Lane and Salford City Reds academy player will be in contention for an early debut at Whitehaven on Sunday (3pm).

Roughyeds have three games in the next month — against Whitehaven, London Skolars at home and South Wales Scorpions away.

Said chairman Chris Hamilton: “He’s strong and aggresive with plenty of experience, and he’ll certainly take us forward.”

Coach Tony Benson was keen to acquire another winger because John Gillam hurt a foot in Sunday’s home defeat by Rochdale Hornets and on-loan winger Chris Holroyde was transferred back to Halifax last week.

Foxen can play in the forwards, but he is known to prefer the wing.

While Foxen was on his way into the Roughyeds’ camp, Lewis Reed was on his way out.

When his initial loan from Keighley Cougars was up after a month he was re-signed on a match-by-match basis, but Cougars have now recalled the utility forward, as is their right.

Leeds Rhinos pair Colton Roche and Daniel Smith, both at Oldham on dual-registration, were in the Rhinos squad against London Broncos and Cumbria in last night’s 9s finals at Headingley.

They will, however, be back with the Roughyeds at training tomorrow (thurs) and available to be selected in the squad to go to Whitehaven at weekend.

Winger Terry Bridge, sent down last November for drugs-related offences, has served his sentence and has returned to the Roughyeds.

He played his first game for several months in the reserve side’s 16-8 defeat at Keighley last Thursday and he is expected to keep his place on the left wing when the under-23s play York City Knights at Whitebank tomorrow (thurs), kick off 7.45pm.

The Junction Inn, Ripponden Road will provide free transport to the reserves game, leaving a7 7pm. Seats must be booked (tel; 0161 633 2759) before 10pm today.

Cost of The Junction’s trip to Whitehaven on Sunday, leaving at 11am, is £14. Advance payment is required by 10pm tomorrow.
