OLDHAM Rugby League Club’s under-18s squad (Extended Scholarship) are to take a lead role in the formation of a new 16s-and-over touch-rugby league in Oldham and Tameside.

It will be run by the local community game and headed by Chris Chamberlain, the Rugby League Development Manager for Oldham and Tameside.

The plan is to launch it at Oldham St Anne’s on Wednesday, April 18 at 6.30pm, but first there will be a taster session at the Whitebank Stadium this Saturday, March 10, starting at 10.30am.

Said Chamberlain: “We want to showcase what touch-rugby is all about and we are grateful to Oldham RL for offering us their scholarship boys to go through the basics.

“Touch rugby is a fast-growing sport and because there is no contact element to it, it can be played by anyone.

“We will be taking entries from workshop teams, pub teams, youth groups, from any collection of people, in fact, who are 16 or over and committed to playing touch-rugby regularly on a league basis.”
