Martin Roden Goes to Oxford

MARTIN Roden, hooker and a member of our backroom staff for the past four years, has followed Tony Benson to new club Oxford.
He was in charge at Whitebank for the final four games of last season, following Benson’s departure, but was not retained by the New Zealander’s successor, Scott Naylor, who appointed his own No 2 in Lee Spencer.
Benson now heads a five-man backroom team at Oxford, with assistance from former Bradford Bulls star Tevita Vaikona, fitness coach Roden, a medical officer and a strength and conditioning coach.
Roden becomes the sixth member of last season’s Roughyeds’ personnel to join the Championship One new boys, alongside head coach Benson and forwards Valu Bentley, David Ellison, Alex Thompson and John Clough.
Oxford today confirmed the capture of Clough, who scored 16 tries in 49 appearances for the Roughyeds across the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Unlike the other Championship One new boys, Hemel Stags and Gloucester All Golds, Oxford will not compete in the Northern Rail Cup, but they make an early-season trip to Whitebank in the league on Sunday, April 28 which promises to be one of the most hotly-contested games of the season.
