Keighley 40 Oldham 14

KEIGHLEY scored seven tries to our three when beating us 40-14 at Cougar Park on Sunday (April 3) in our fourth Co-operative Championship One game of the season (one win, three defeats).

We had some clear-cut scoring opportunities while playing down the slope in the first half — mainly when Mick Diveney’s wide passes to his right put Mark Brocklehurst into space — but we failed to execute the finish properly and arrived at half-time losing 18-0 and with a huge task ahead of us in the second period.

Once again, the Roughyeds’ defensive work left a lot to be desired as we slipped to our third league defeat in a row, having conceded a total of 25 tries at an average of eight a game in defeats by Workington away, Swinton at home and Keighley away.

We did better in the second half at Keighley, scoring three tries by Ben Heaton, Shaun Robinson and Lucas Onyango, with Diveney instrumental in sparking the moves for all three.

His trademark wide ball to Brocklehurst was finally rewwarded when Brocky got up the touchline and turned the ball inside to Heaton to gallop away to the line.

Then it was Diveney’s towering bomb to the left corner on the last tackle that caused utter confusion in the Keighley defence and allowed Robinson to grab the try.

Finally, it was a little kick over the top by Diveney that again caused panic in the Cougars rearguard and enabled a situation to develop in which Lucas got over in the right-hand corner.

The problem was that, while we were scoring these tries, Keighley were notching up even more tries of their own at the other end of the field.

They outscored us four tries to three in the second half on a day when we were once more unlucky with injuries. This time Ben Wood went off with a thumb injury midway through the first half, never to return. That meant that for most of the game we had only three subs and that for much of the second half we had three hookers on the pitch — Danny Whitmore at half-back, John Clough in his usual hookign role and Martin Roden at loose-forward.
