A BUCKET collection at last Sunday’s game against Whitehaven raised £123 for the Cobra Kan Karate Do Tournament team, who gave an exhibition of their skills during the half-time interval,

The club is run by Helen O’Donnell and Gill Leicester at three venues — Yew Tree School, Chadderton; St James Church Hall, Shaw; and Holy Family Primary School, Limeside.

Three members of the team, Tanya, Jessica and Kirsty fought off 12 other world-class teams at the WKC World Championships in Cadiz last year to become Team Kata Champions.

They hope to defend their title this year in Montreal in October as England’s representatives.

Said Helen: “We are a small, but very successful team, competing at local, national and international events. We have seven students in total who have qualified for this year’s World Championships, but in order for them to travel to Montreal and compete we need to raise £8,400.

“We had a great afternoon with the Roughyeds at Whitebank. A big thank-you to the club and thanks also to everyone who contributed to our collection.”
