The collection at Oldham Rugby League Club’s home game against Gloucester for four-year-old Joseph Sydney Atherton, who has severe mental and physical disabilities, raised £216.
“Our heartfelt thanks go out to everybody who helped to make our day at Whitebank such a memorable one,” said Joe Joe’s grandma, Marilyn Atherton, of Fold Green, Chadderton.
Joe Joe was team mascot for the day and he led Roughyeds on to the pitch, assisted by Marilyn and his auntie, Andrea McKenna, of Shaw.
The club has adopted his appeal, from which the family hope to raise £6,000 initially for equipment that will improve Joe Joe’s quality of life.
Club chairman Chris Hamilton, who in the past has raised thousands of pounds for breast-cancer charities, is planning a personal challenge, which will be sponsored in support of the appeal.
