Injury update

PROP Bruce Johnson and back-row man Jamie Acton, both members of the first-team squad, return from injury in the Oldham RL reserves team to play Halifax at Whitebank tonight (7.45pm kick off).

Also back is a third forward, Mark Thomas, who has been out for several weeks while undergoing tests for a stomach disorder.

“To have these three knocking on the door again will make a massive difference,” said coach Paul Ashton, whose injury-hit and below-strength under-23s were beaten 84-16 at Featherstone last time out.

Roughyeds on that occasion had only three substitutes, one of whom was former reserve team captain Jamie Knight, who came out of retirement to assist Ashton in his hour of need.

Knight, however, paid a price for his good turn, suffering a recurrence of an old knee injury which keeps him out of tonight’s game.

Also out is goalkicking loose-forward Mark Smith, whose full-time job has taken him abroad for several months.

Only 17 players have been named by Ashton so far, but he hopes to have four men on the bench as usual by the time the team reports to Whitebank tonight in readiness for pre-match formalties.

Team (from): Nield, Fisher, Hinsley, Worrall, Lloyd, Connick, Noon, Joy, Hughes, Langtree, Cunningham, Moran, Mansfield, Forman, Thomas, Johnson, Acton.

Roughyeds will be keen to avenge Halifax’s 22-14 win at Whitebank five weeks ago.

Added Ashton: “It’s not rocket science . . . we just need to complete our sets and make sure we don’t give penalties away. If we do that everything else will slot into shape.”

Phil Costin’s under-18s also play Halifax at Whitebank, but not until Saturday with a 2.30pm kick-off.

The ORSA meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled and the next meeting will be on Thursday, July 5 at Whitebank (8pm).

The next ORSA event is a Quiz Night at Higginshaw Amateur RL Club on Friday, June 22, entry £1 per person including raffle.
