Hunslet Hawks 36 Oldham 10

WE went down fighting in the third round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup, losing 36-10 at Hunslet Hawks on a day when we had three tries disallowed and missed at least as many good scoring opportunities.

It was always going to be a big ask to take on opponents from a higher division on their ground, but we didn’t help ourselves by taking wrong options at key moments in attack and once again struggling to hold our line intact when defending in our own 20-metre area.
We were at our best in the first 20 minutes of each half, but in the second 20 of each half  Hunslet scored 18 points and 14 points respectively.
Their other try came in the fourth minute, but we recovered from that to lead 6-4 when Jamie Dallimore touched down Lewis Palfrey’s defence-splitting kick and then added the goal.
Hunslet then struck with three converted tries in 13 minutes to lead 22-6 at half-time, but the score didn’t reflect the effort we had put in, especially so considering that we missed two golden chances when unmarked players in a broken field were not given the ball.
This tendency to take wrong options also cost us dearly in the second half when we had most of the ball and most of the territorial advantage for fully 20 minutes, but once again found it impossible to turn those positive factors into points.
Danny Samuel had a score disallowed for a double movement and we also went close on other occasions, usually when Danny Langtree struck on the right or Josh Crowley made a bust up the left side.
Having soaked up all our pressure, Hunslet then responded with three more tries to underline the biggest single difference between the sides.
By way of consolation it was Oldham who brought the scoring to an end when Adam Files went in at the corner on the last play of the game.
