Hunslet Hawks 17, Oldham 16 (aet)

AFTER beating Hunslet by one point in our two previous encounters — 24-23 at Whitebank in the league and 25-24 at the South Leeds Stadium in the play-off — it was our turn to suffer the heartbreak of a defeat by the narrowest of margins when we went down 17-16 to the Hawks in the Kingstone Press Championship One Grand Final at Headingley.
At the end of 80 minutes we were all locked up at 16-16 and the game then moved into golden-point territory with Steve Roper putting a drop-goal attempt agonisingly and only narrowly wide before man-of-the-match Thomas Coyle broke Oldham hearts with a ‘golden’ winner six minutes into extra time.
The game was a fantastic advert for the standard of rugby at third-tier level, but the spoils of victory went to Hunslet who win promotion to the Championship at the first attempt, having been relegated 12 months ago.
While Hunslet were marginally the better side, there was nothing to separate them apart from the Coyle winner.
