How the Chronicle reported our awardDate published: Tuesday, November 17, 2015
UNDER the headline ‘Roughyeds’ Reward’ this is how the Oldham Evening Chronicle described to readers our involvement in the newspaper’s Pride In Oldham Awards Night 2015 in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Hall:
Sporting heroes from Oldham Rugby League Club were presented with a special award to commemorate their historic promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship.
“The Roughyeds received the Special Recognition Sports Award during the ceremony and had the chance to relive moments from their brilliant and hard-fought campaign which saw them crowned League One champions.
“The club made Oldham proud after their 31-20 victory over Keighley Cougars in the League One Promotion Final earned them their first opportunity to compete in the higher league.
“Boss Chris Hamilton said: ‘We are really chuffed to have won this award. It was a fantastic season for us. We’ve been so close to success on the field for so long, but we finally achieved promotion. This award just caps it all off.’
“The One Future Oldham Sports Awards, which are usually held in July, chose to present the team with the special award ahead of the start of their 2016 season.
“Oldham Chronicle Managing Editor David Whaley, who presented the award, added: ‘I am delighted that the sports awards steering committee chose to honour Oldham Rugby League Club during the Pride awards. The club worked hard to finally achieve promotion and this is a credit to them for their inspirational season.
“ ‘As the music said to the excellent picture sequence that welcomed them to the stage . . . ‘it’s been a long time coming !’ “
Chairman Chris Hamilton and captain Lewis Palfrey went on stage to receive their award and their stylish curved glass trophy from David Whaley.
Also on show were the Kingstone Press League One leaders’ shield and the championship Rose Bowl, Roughyeds having won 19 of their 22 league games to finish top of the league before beating second-placed Keighley at Whitebank in the Promotion Final to carry off the championship trophy.
