Hornets 16 Oldham 23

WE geared up for Wednesday night’s iPro Sport Cup semi-final against North Wales Crusaders at Whitebank (7.30pm) with the best possible start to our 22-game Kingstone Press League One programme —- a 23-16 derby-day win at Rochdale.

It wasn’t our best performance by any means, especially in the first half, but just as we did at Barrow when we knocked them out of the iPro Sport Cup we hauled ourselves back into contention just before half time and then scored 11 points in the last quarter of an hour to secure the win.
Hornets swept into an early 12-0 lead (just as Barrow did) but on our first serious venture into the home half we responded with a Josh Crowley try wide out, goaled superbly off the touch line by Lewis Palfrey.
Hornets extended their lead with a penalty goal, but on the last play of the first half we scored the try of the match —- a fabulous effort in which George Tyson and Adam Clay combined beautifully on the right wing before Palfrey backed up on the inside to finish off behind the posts.
That try alone was worth the admission money for Oldham fans, who were treated to a much more Roughyeds-like display in the second half.
As we got on top, Palfrey’s two penalty goals gave us a 16-14 lead. Paul Crook levelled things up at 16-16 with a long-range penalty, but we roared to victory in the closing minutes with Crowley’s second try, a Palfrey conversion and then a Steve Roper drop goal to finish the job.
“Our fitness, mental attitude and great character saw us home,” said a delighted Scott Naylor. “I’m ecstatic about the way we’ve started the season in cup and league, but we’ve still a huge amount of improving to do.
“We’ll enjoy this win for  couple of days, then the focus will be on North Wales Crusaders.”
