Haggarty does well on debut

BY signing for Oldham on loan, prop Matthew Haggarty has brought Scott Naylor’s seven-week chase to a successful conclusion.

Haggarty, the 22-year-old Barrow Raiders prop or second-row forward, signed on Friday for a month.

He previously played with Whitehaven, and has also had experience with Leigh.

He made his Oldham debut off the bench in the match at Oxford, where Roughyeds won 22-4.

Said Naylor: “I’ve been hunting him for a few weeks, so I’m naturally delighted he’s finally here.

“Lee Spencer (his No 2) and I have known Matthew for a while and we know what he is capable of. The more rugby he gets the better he will play.

“We are trying to create an environment of quality so as to put pressure on everybody to perform.”

Prop Liam Gilchrist (calf) failed a fitness test ahead of the win at Oxford, where Naylor’s starting props were Oldham-born pair Phil Joy and Michael Ward.

Haggarty was one of four forwards on the bench, alongside his fellow loan player Nathan Mason.

Early reports indicate there were no new injury problems from a tough clash, apart from the customary bumps and bruises.

Promotion-chasing Roughyeds are now only one point behind leaders North Wales Crusaders, who come to Whitebank on the last Sunday in July.

By then, Naylor’s men could be on top of the league if they beat South Wales at Whitebank next Sunday because Crusaders have another blank weekend and then play London Skolars in the Northern Rail Bowl on the weekend of July 21.

They are not in action again in the league until they come to Oldham on July 28.
