Guest speaker at the Roughyeds’ mid-season dinner

KEVIN Fitzpatrick, the well-known local journalist, radio reporter and Oldham Chronicle columnist, will be guest speaker at the Roughyeds’ mid-season dinner to be held at Whitebank on Thursday night, May 26.

As the BBC Radio Manchester reporter for the whole of the Oldham-Tameside region, Kevin has his finger on the pulse of the local community and all that is going on.

But he’s no stranger to rugby league, either, having played as a full-back for Saddleworth Rangers, Oldham St Anne’s and later for Oldham Roughyeds.

He’ll be talking about his life as a reporter, the big stories he’s covered and the personalities he’s interviewed. And how things can go wrong, as they often do.

No doubt, he’ll also have a few words to relate about his “glittering” rugby career and his self-acclaimed status as the ‘Great New Philosopher of our times’.

If you’ve ever read his column in the Chronicle you’ll know he’s not quite as clever as he thinks he is, though.

Either way, Kevin will have an interesting story to tell, not least about his days in the Roughyeds camp as a young player hoping to make his mark in the game.

He later went on to fulfil his ambition to become a journalist specialising in radio work.

Entertainment will also be provided by local comedienne and vocalist, the ever-popular Donna Elson, so don’t delay, ring the Roughyeds office now for tickets on 0161 628 3677 and speak to Janet.

Tickets for the three-course dinner, accompanied by Kevin and Donna, are £30 a head or £300 plus vat for a corporate table of ten.

With no home games during a six-week period when work will be carried out on the Whitebank pitch this is a chance for fans to get together for a first-rate social event and at the same time help the club to raise funds to assist it through this spell when there will be no cash coming through the turnstiles.
