G&G carpet & bed centre showroom halftime competition

Roughyeds fans will be given the opportunity to throw themselves around on the Whitebank pitch during half-time in the Oldham v Rochdale derby clash on Sunday.

They will, however, be provided with a soft landing . . . thanks to match sponsors G and G Carpets and Bed Centre of Lees, who will provide a mattress to be placed strategically under the posts so that nobody will need the attention of the club physio Rachael Johnson.

“It’s going to provide some half-time fun and frolics for the fans and it will be part of the match sponsorship package provided by G and G Carpets,” said the Roughyeds’ commercial manager Rachael Marsters.

“We will be asking for four or five volunteers from the crowd to compete with each other to provide the most dramatic and thrilling touchdown of the day, flying through the air and landing on the G and G mattress of course so that nobody gets hurt. Think Ben Heaton at Doncaster.

“Roary the Roughyed will be involved and we will be asking the crowd to pick the winner by how hard they cheer for each competitor.”

G and G Carpet Warehouse and Bed Centre of Lees have a sponsorship agreement with the club which includes advertising and the staging of promotional events at Whitebank, and this will be the first of them.

G and G proprietor Gary Smith has run the carpet showrooms in Lees for the past 12 years, but in a joint venture with his wife Joanne he has now extended the business and opened the bed centre on the same village-centre site.

Said Gary: “Our customers have been very loyal to us over the years in much the same way that Oldham RL Club’s supporters have been loyal to the club. If we can help the club to be successful while at the same time promoting G and G among the club’s supporters then we can all benefit.”

General manager Bob Marsden, Gary’s brother-in-law, played for Oldham, Rochdale, Salford and Huddersfield and his son, Ben, also a rugby league forward, has followed in father’s footsteps by signing for Roughyeds and showing up well this season in the successful reserves side.

“I’m excited by everything Roughyeds are doing on and off the field,” said Bob, once a great favourite of the Oldham club in Watersheddings days and later a popular player also at Rochdale Hornets.
