Gerry, Gareth ‘go smooth’

OLDHAM Rugby fans Gerry Jones and Gareth Hughes will have that smooth look at Sunday’s game against Gloucester All Golds.

Starting at noon in the Whitebank club-house, they will have their backs and chests waxed to raise money for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice and for the Oldham players’ end–of–season celebrations.

Gerry (35) and Gareth (39) are two of a group of a dozen regular fans who have supported Roughyeds home and away for years.

Said Gerry, Oldham-born but living in Leeds: “The players have done a fantastic job this year.

“We’ve travelled all over the country, going to every game, and it’s been awesome.

“The boys have done us proud and this is our way of showing some appreciation.

“We might win the league outright or we might have to go through the play-offs, but there’s a dozen of us, men and women, and we’ll be right behind the boys no matter what happens.

“This is the best Oldham team I can remember since the old days at Watersheddings.

“We are even going to the London Skolars v Crusaders game the night before Wembley in order to cheer Skolars on to what will hopefully be a very important win as far as Roughyeds are concerned.

“Once the season is over the boys deserve a ‘mad Monday’ celebration and half our sponsorship money will go towards that.

“The other half will go to Dr Kershaw’s because a relative of one of our group has had cause to be very grateful to the hospice.”

Performing the waxing procedure will be Melanie Hughes, Gareth’s wife, and Michaela Bradley, Gerry’s cousin.
