TONY Benson, the rugby league coach who has guided Oldham to seven league wins out of seven, has a trio of new fans who are backing the New Zealander to spearhead a promotion push this summer.

They are the management team at G and G Carpet Warehouse and Bed Centre of Lees, who have been so impressed with what the Kiwi has achieved so far that they are to sponsor him in a partnership with the club which also includes advertising and promotional events at the Roughyeds’ new home at Whitebank Stadium.

“It isn’t every day a club gets its coach sponsored, but G and G are putting their faith in Tony and the Roughyeds and we are thrilled to welcome on board another local company,” said the club’s commercial manager Rachael Marsters, a fellow Kiwi.

G and G proprietor Gary Smith has run the carpet showrooms in Lees for the past 12 years, but in a joint venture with his wife Joanne he has now extended the business and opened the bed centre on the same village-centre site.

Said Gary, who has worked in the floor covering business for 33 years: “We have completed a full refurbishment and opened the bed centre. We offer quality, value and service in both our carpet showrooms and our bed centre with carpets, vinyls and beds all available on the same site.

“We have a good reputation both locally and further afield and we will now extend that reputation as we extend our business.

“Our customers have been very loyal to us over the years in much the same way that Oldham RL Club’s supporters have been loyal to the club. If we can back Tony, the coach, and the club and help it to be successful while at the same time promoting G and G locally and among the club’s supporters then we can all benefit.”

General manager Bob Marsden, Gary’s brother-in-law, played for Oldham, Rochdale, Salford and Huddersfield and his son, Ben, also a rugby league forward, has followed in father’s footsteps by signing for Roughyeds.

“I’m excited by everything the club is doing on and off the field,” said Bob, “and their move to Whitebank is a fantastic development. You’ve got to have a base where you can build your club’s identity, like Watersheddings when I played for Oldham, and Whitebank will make a huge difference to what the club can achieve.

“At G and G we are also extending and developing and if we can do it in tandem with Tony and the Roughyeds that will be great.”

Said Benson: “I’m proud to have the backing of G and G and proud to know that a local family-owned firm with its roots in the community is prepared to get behind the club in this way.

“I really enjoyed my visit to the firm’s showrooms in Lees. I was impressed with Gary and Bob, really nice guys, and I enjoyed 40 winks on a G and G bed and a cuddle with a New Zealand sheepskin rug!

“We’ll be doing some game-day promotional stuff at Whitebank with G and G and we wish them the success they wish us. I hope it is the start of a long-term relationship.”
