Ford set for Whitebank bow

JON Ford is set to make his first appearance at Whitebank since September 7 last year in Oldham RL Club’s first home game in League One against Coventry Bears on Sunday (3pm kick-off).

The big centre, who’s on a three-month loan deal from Salford Red Devils, has played in away games at Sheffield and Rochdale, but he was ineligible for Wednesday’s iPro Sport Cup semi-final against North Wales Crusaders because he didn’t sign in time to play in either of the two earlier rounds.
On a semi-final night when both teams utilised the high cross-kick to the corner, Ford’s 6ft 4in frame would have come in handy, as it did when Crusaders were last at Whitebank in 2013 and he helped himself to a hat-trick in Oldham’s 28-10 win.
Sunday’s game will be the Roughyeds’ third in ten days and Scott Naylor will pick from his full squad of 22 —- his semi-final 17 plus Ford, Steven Nield, Richard Joy, Tom Dempsey and latest recruit Tom Ashton, who is still waiting for his debut.
Coventry, who have signed three young players from HULL KR on loan, got off to a winning start last week by beating Oxford.
Said coach Tom Tsang: “Hopefully, we can use the enthusiasm and energy that were generated by the win against Oxford and put them to good use at Oldham.”
