Fireplace Superstore

OUR captain Lewis Palfrey, new-boy Adam Clay and assistant coach Lee ‘Spanner’ Spencer will have two special fans supporting them at Sunday’s big game against Hunslet Hawks at Whitebank (3pm kick-off).

Spanner’ isn’t only a voice of authority to Lewis and Adam on training nights and match days . . . he’s their immediate boss in their full-time day jobs, working for Fireplace Superstore (0161 488 4991), based at Stanley Green Trading Estate, Cheadle.

And its the Fireplace Superstore owners, Neil Gent and his wife Debbie, who will be making their first visit to Whitebank to support the three members of their work force and to raise a special cheer for Lewis, whom they are sponsoring for the season.
Said Lewis: “They watched us in last year’s Grand Final, but it will be a ‘first’ for them at Whitebank, and we hope to do enough on the field to make sure it won’t be their last.
“They employ all three of us, so they’ve certainly heard enough about Oldham RLFC to know what to expect and who to look out for.”
Also present at Sunday’s big game will be a party from the Oldham Players’ Association, including two great stalwarts of the former Oldham club in Martin Murphy and Mike Elliott.
‘Murph’, fondly remembered as a great full-back, made 462 appearances — a post-war club record — and scored 52 tries, although he was better known for the tries he prevented with his superb tackling and covering.
Mike, an accomplished winger, clocked up 446 games and ran in 153 tries in another distinguished playing career.
Don’t forget also that our very own Neil Roden, who scored 113 tries in nearly 300 games, has a testimonial dinner at Whitebank on Saturday, August 9 (guest speaker Andy Gregory, MC Ian Smith) and that tickets priced £25 can be purchased in the social club (cash or cheque only) before and after Sunday’s game.
We extend to all our season-ticket holders, fans, sponsors and other visitors a warm Whitebank welcome on Sunday and trust you have a very enjoyable day.
See you Sunday !
